Q:  From late 2003 and 2004 I amassed three charges, including a felony where charges were dropped and two misdemeanors. Since the crimes, I’ve turned my life around and am completing my PhD. Is federal employment requiring a security clearance a possibility? I was only convicted of one misdemeanor, and it has been more than eight years since the incidents.

William H. Henderson, FEDCAS, replies:

If these are the only criminal offenses in your background and you have not been involved in any serious misconduct since 2004, you have a reasonably good chance of being granted a security clearance, assuming you have no other potentially disqualifying issues.
