Internships are an important stepping stone on many career paths. ClearanceJobs sat down with two interns at Frontier Technology, Inc. (FTI) to learn more about their experiences as interns and their advice for those considering internships.

Morgan Beasley is a senior at Ball State University, studying marketing and taking a minor in strategic communications. She hopes to continue focusing on marketing but is learning to enjoy the recruitment side, spending more time on campaigning and marketing strategies.

Brett Webb is a recent grad from Colorado School of Mines with a degree in computer science. He’s a software intern at FTI but isn’t sure what he wants to do as a career yet. He chose this internship because it gave him a view into defense contracting. He’s also learned about data science and machine learning, but hopes to go into software engineering and work with or for the government.

The FTI Difference

When asked what made them want to work with FTI, both Brett and Morgan mentioned the communication from FTI recruiters. “I never had to wonder where things were with my application,” says Morgan. The opportunity for a remote internship was another key for Morgan, and Brett explained that the recruiter did a great job telling him all the benefits of working with FTI.

Through her internship, Morgan has loved the chance to gain hands-on experience and knowledge along with the opportunity to make a real impact. She’s also appreciated the interest FTI takes in their interns. “They take so much time to make sure that the work you’re working on is something that’s of interest to you, not just something that they need to have done,” she said.

Brett agreed, but also mentioned the chance to have real conversations with management. He said, “I didn’t feel like I was just another intern. I could sit and have a real conversation with my managers.” They even understood that FTI might not be a long-term fit for his career path, but they still helped him better himself so he could be prepared for his next internship or his next job. “They wanted to see me grow, which was really awesome.”

Advice for Future Interns

Both Brett and Morgan have some advice for other interns who want to gain the most from their experiences.

Brett encouraged interns to try to talk to as many people within the company as possible, and even wishes he would have taken the time to talk to more people while he was an intern. Talking to others in the company about what they’re working on is a chance to learn more about the company as a whole and may even help guide your career path into other areas or departments where your knowledge and background make you a good fit.

Morgan suggests getting involved in extracurriculars in college to gain experience that sets you apart from other internship candidates. She also encourages interns not to doubt their own skills and abilities and to take on projects they might not know everything about. Keep learning and asking questions, and Morgan says, “by the end of the internship, you can add a new skill to your resume!”

Internships are one of the best ways to invest in tomorrow’s talent. FTI gives their interns real-world experience, hands-on education, and the opportunity to explore new career areas.
