At a recent ClearanceJobs.com career event in Reston, Va., we picked the brain of Angela Glover, a Facility Security Officer and Recruiter for The Louis Berger Group, to discover what she searches for in potential hires.

What specific positions are you Looking to fill today?

“Construction management and civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering. Most of our positions involve work on US embassies and are located overseas.  We are looking for a range of clearances.”

Is it possible you will make a hire from the candidates you met here?

“Yes, definitely. We have recruiters for each division, and I specialize in engineering. I plan on connecting a few candidates here today with our IT recruiters.”

How often to you make hires on ClearanceJobs?

“I actually used ClearanceJobs.com to find a job!” revealed Glover, a cleared professional herself. “But I didn’t really use it as an employer…this was the first time I got into it.” After discovering what CJ offers, Glover was enthused. “To learn that I could put in a bulk message to candidates to say, ‘Hey, I have this position.’ I was so excited.”

What irks you the most about the resumes you see?

“They’re too long,” she quips. “I don’t like to have to look past the first page.”  While Glover says a multi-page resume is acceptable for older candidates with extensive experience, candidates need to be as concise as possible.  “I really don’t care if you were a sales rep at Victoria’s Secret in 1998.  Your certifications, education and most recent job experience should be on the first page.  I’m looking for your current work, and for it to be right there in my face.”

What’s a common candidate faux pas?

Unprofessional email addresses. “Your email address needs to be something  simple: first name, last name and a couple numbers if your name is a popular one.”  She laments some of the more ridiculous combinations she’s seen.  “It’s mostly kids who are straight out of college, I think.  But once you’re in the real world, a foolish email address will overshadow a perfect resume.”
