As it turns out, Idaho is full of surprises. For example, its state raptor is the peregrine falcon. You can also visit Cottonwood, ID and stay at a bed and breakfast shaped like a giant beagle. But perhaps most interestingly (and relevantly), Idaho is now the state with the fastest growing wages in the nation.

While the U.S. as a whole saw 3.1 percent growth in from 2016 to 2017, Idaho workers saw an impressive 5.3 percent increase in earnings. In addition, with overall U.S. unemployment at 4.1 percent, Idaho boasts only 3 percent unemployment.

Which Industries are Driving Idaho’s Growth?

Much of Idaho’s economic growth is in the durable goods manufacturing sector, where it saw a 9.7 percent gain over the last year. In particular, Idaho is home to computer-parts manufacturers which are showing encouraging growth—so much so that it’s outpacing the number of available candidates. Employees are in high demand in construction, food service, and agriculture as well.

Idaho Has Jobs for Cleared Candidates, Too

A new FBI Data Center is under construction in Pocatello as we speak (and employers are hiring for the project). A consolidation of existing offices, the complex will be more cost-efficient and will employ 350 people in various fields.

According to the FBI’s Chief Financial Officer, Pocatello’s main draws were its landscape and its people. What’s more, energy costs in Idaho will be drastically lower than on the east coast. With the site already purchased in 1980 at a modest cost, the FBI says the center will save money, boost efficiency, and free up other offices to focus on their mission-critical tasks.

Now, with per capita income ranked 44th in the nation, Idaho is already kind of playing ketchup. But a 5.3 percent increase in pay is no small potatoes. With Idaho’s beautiful natural landscape, low cost of living, and serious economic growth, considering a move is hardly a half-baked idea. Perhaps it’s time to consider a job in Idaho.

Wages Are Growing across the WEST

But let’s say you love the majestic scenery of the American West, but can’t stand all the potato jokes from yankee smartmouths (see above). The good news is that all but two of the top ten states for wage growth are west of the Rockies (give or take). Many of these states owe their rising rates of pay to agriculture, oil, mining, tech and advanced manufacturing. However, the list also boasts some of the biggest hubs for the aviation industry—prime considerations for any cleared job-seeker.

Rank State % Wage Growth
1 Idaho 5.3
2 Washington 5.2
3 Arizona 4.8
4 Utah 4.7
5 Colorado 4.6
6 Nevada 4.3
7 California 4.2
8 Oregon 3.9
9 Georgia* 3.8
10 North Carolina* 3.8
