Going to college is expensive, and some people don’t have the tools to apply for the many loans and grants it can take to get you there if you don’t have the funds to pay the bill.

Blue collar jobs are classified as positions in manufacturing, transportation, utilities, wholesale and retail trade, natural resources, custodial or construction. And even require a security clearance if you are supporting customers in the federal government.

These roles are important to the logistics of how the DoD operates efficiently and require less than a four-college degree which can break the bank. These positions typically require vocational schooling or training.

Blue collar clearance work is booming in the DoD, from anything like a cable slicer, an electrician, a pipefitter or a welder. Here are the top 3 blue collar jobs and employers you should be applying to:

  1. Welder
    1. GDIT is hiring for a certified welder to provide to provide quality assurance inspection and support for the Bureau of Diplomatic Security’s Armored Vehicle Program. This position requires a secret clearance.
  2. Electrician
    1. If you’re looking for sunny skies, PAE is seeking an electrician to support a client in Destin, FL, requiring a TS/SCI security with polygraph. Bonus hint: they are looking for carpenters and plumbers, as well.
  3. Logistics
    1. Akima is seeking a logistics lead in the DMV area with a secret clearance. A HS diploma or GED is the minimum education, but they are hoping for candidates with experience in US Army logistics or procurement.

If you enjoy jobs where you can work with your hands and ones that get you out of the cubicle, home office, or SCIF, choosing a job in one of the blue-collar fields may be a great fit for you.
