The latest episode of ClearedCast: The Security Clearance Careers Podcast features a conversation with Rupal Patel, a former CIA officer turned leadership coach and CEO of the Global Leadership Lab. Patel is also the author of From CIA to CEO: Unconventional Life Lessons for Thinking Bigger, Leading Better, and Being Bolder.
Patel shared her unexpected path to the CIA. While pursuing a master’s degree in international affairs, she was recruited by the Agency—despite having originally planned for law school or the Foreign Service. What followed was a year-long security clearance process filled with background checks, polygraphs, and uncertainty. During that waiting period, she kept busy with odd jobs and temporary work, not knowing if she would ultimately be cleared to join.
Once inside, Patel worked in war zones and briefed policymakers in high-stakes environments. Often the only woman in the room, she built confidence by remembering she was chosen because of her expertise. She credited leaders who supported her with stretch assignments and candid feedback, creating what she described as a “virtuous circle” of growth and resilience.
In the episode, Patel also discussed leadership beyond the intelligence community. She emphasized the importance of meritocracy over hierarchy, and the role of leaders in helping individuals see and reach their potential. To counter imposter syndrome, she encouraged practices like setting ambitious personal challenges each year to prove what is possible.
Patel’s journey from intelligence tradecraft to corporate boardrooms illustrates how skills developed in high-pressure, cleared careers translate into practical leadership lessons. Her insights offer a roadmap for building resilience, silencing self-doubt, and leading with clarity and authenticity.
