Patel shared her unexpected path to the CIA. While pursuing a master’s degree in international affairs, she was recruited by the Agency—despite having originally planned for law school or the Foreign Service. During that waiting period, she kept busy with odd jobs and temporary work, not knowing if she would ultimately be cleared to join.
Once inside, Patel worked in war zones and briefed policymakers in high-stakes environments. Often the only woman in the room, she built confidence by remembering she was chosen because of her expertise. She credited leaders who supported her with stretch assignments and candid feedback, creating what she described as a “virtuous circle” of growth and resilience.
