The U.S. Intelligence Community is a group of federal agencies that performs all of the intelligence activities supporting foreign policy in national defense. Here are the top agencies to work for within the IC:
- The Office of the Director of National Intelligence or ODNI, which is the top-level agency providing all oversight.
- The Central Intelligence Agency or CIA, which provides intelligence collection and analyzes threats, headquartered in Langley, Virginia.
- The Defense Intelligence Agency or DIA specializes in military intelligence.
- The National Security Agency or NSA, which is the IC component that provides signals intelligence or SIGINT to officials.
- The National Geospatial- Intelligence Agency or NGA, is a group that exploits and analyzes data from imagery or signals with geospatial information.
- The National Reconnaissance Office or NRO out of Chantilly, Virginia designs and operates satellites used by the federal government.
- The Department of Justice’s Federal Bureau of Investigation which makes sure that the entire IC has the legal tools in place to perform intelligence operations under US federal law.
A few of the other smaller divisions include the Department of Energy’s Office of Intelligence and Counter-Intelligence, the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis, the Drug Enforcement Agency’s Office of National Security Intelligence, the Department of State’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research or INR, the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis, and the intelligence shops within the military branches of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard and Space Force.
