In 1907, the U.S. Army Signal Corps appointed an Aeronautical Division to be in charge of “all matters pertaining to military ballooning, air machines, and all other kindred subjects.” It wasn’t long before they began acquiring “air machines” of all kinds, utilizing the new technology to support the United States Army and our country’s allies.

The 1st Aero Squadron was established in 1913, and it was the first military unit of the Army focused solely on aviation. The Aeronautical Division was replaced by the Aviation Section in 1914 and was made up of 60 officers and 260 enlisted men. The Aviation Section was tasked with supervising and operating all military aircraft and signaling apparatuses

It wasn’t until 1947 that the Department of the Air Force became its own separate military branch, but the importance of air support during World War I underscored the need for a capable air division.

Today, the Air Force is its own military branch employing hundreds of thousands of men and women across the globe.
