If you’re job hunting, then you probably know that your interactions with recruiters can be the make or break for getting you in the door at a new company. What you don’t see behind the scenes is the amount of time recruiters spend looking at your resume before deciding if they want to move forward. If you’re struggling to receive responses or see movement in the hiring process, you may be guilty of one or more of these tendencies.

Your Resume Might Be Wordy, But It Doesn’t Say Much

Having a lengthy resume doesn’t equate to showcasing a meaningful outline of your accomplishments. A recruiter wants  to understand what you’ve done and what you bring to the table in rapid fire mode. If they’re having to sift through filler words and information, you may have already bored them onto the next candidate.

You Make Communication Feel Arduous

Having professional communication with recruiters matters more than many candidates realize. Lengthy delays in your response time, unclear answers to questions, and showing up to conversations unprepared can make recruiters hesitant to take the next step with you. Recruiters are often trying to move quickly to weed out who they shouldn’t pursue, so don’t let yourself fall into that category.

You Apply to Jobs Without a Clear Direction

If you’re in a time crunch to find something new, it may be tempting to apply to hundreds of jobs on autopilot without tailoring your resume or understanding each unique role. Appearing unfocused and scattered to recruiters may cause them to question if you’re serious about the role or if you’re simply applying everywhere out of frustration. You don’t need to have every detail of where you’re heading figured out, but having a clear sense of direction in where you want to be is key.

Recruiters lose interest faster than many candidates realize, and it’s often because of smaller issues as opposed to major professional red flags. Knowing that you can fix these habits gives you power as you job hunt, immediately making you a more competitive candidate.
