At a time when military recruitment numbers continue to face historic challenges, the national conversation often focuses on incentives, advertising campaigns, and policy debates. But after a conversation with Navy officer, nonprofit founder, and transition advocate Jai Salters, I’ve found the answer may be far simpler. If we truly support our service members during and after their military careers, recruitment will take care of itself.
Salters knows firsthand what military service can provide, and what can happen when transitioning veterans are left to navigate civilian life without the right tools. From growing up in foster care to surviving the emotional aftermath of 9/11 as a New Yorker, to eventually becoming both an enlisted sailor and Navy officer, his journey has become the foundation for a mission that is now changing thousands of lives through ACT Now Education.
After serving as an enlisted sailor and later earning a commission as a Navy officer, Salters reached a turning point around the 10-year mark in his military career. He realized that operational experience alone would not guarantee long-term success. He needed to reinvent himself.
That reinvention came through education, certifications, and networking, areas many transitioning service members either don’t fully understand or don’t have access to early enough.
Today, Salters leads one of the fastest-growing volunteer-driven organizations focused on helping service members, veterans, and military spouses gain access to education, technical certifications, mentorship, and career opportunities in high-demand industries like cybersecurity, cloud computing, AI, project management, and IT.
And in many cases, those resources come at no cost.
Solving the Problem Others Were Missing
One of the biggest flaws in the military transition system is timing. Too many service members wait until their final months in uniform to begin thinking about life after service. Programs like TAP (Transition Assistance Program) often become a check-the-box requirement instead of a long-term development strategy. ACT Now Education was built to change that mindset entirely.
The organization helps active-duty service members, veterans, and military spouses gain access to more than $50,000 worth of technical training and certifications at no cost through partnerships, scholarships, and volunteer-led initiatives.
The goal is simple: create pathways into high-demand careers before transition becomes a crisis.
Participants can access training in:
- Cybersecurity
- Cloud computing
- Artificial intelligence
- Data analytics
- Project management
- Information technology
- Software and emerging tech fields
For many veterans, these certifications become the bridge between military experience and six-figure civilian opportunities. What makes ACT Now Education unique isn’t just the training opportunities, it’s the culture behind them.
The organization has grown into a massive volunteer-powered movement fueled by people who genuinely want to help others succeed. That culture stems directly from Salters’ leadership philosophy.
Growing up in foster care taught him resilience. Experiencing the uncertainty and fear surrounding 9/11 reinforced the importance of service. His military career taught him discipline and accountability.
But mentorship changed everything.
Now, he’s paying that forward.
The Best Way to Strengthen Recruitment
As conversations continue around military readiness and recruitment shortfalls, the solution is hiding in plain sight. Support veterans better. Help them succeed after service. Invest in their families, education, and careers. When young Americans see veterans thriving in civilian life, not struggling through transition, military service becomes more attractive again.
That success story becomes contagious.
And organizations like ACT Now Education are proving that meaningful support doesn’t just change individual lives. It strengthens the entire military community. Because ultimately, recruitment is built on trust. And trust is earned by how we treat those who already answered the call to serve.
