At ClearanceJobs Connect, a panel of veteran cleared-space recruiters made one thing clear: no amount of automation replaces getting the fundamentals right at the start of a search.

Tommy Weinert, founder of Mount Indie, said the biggest driver of a fast, successful placement isn’t sourcing tools — it’s the intake conversation. “Requirements are never right,” he told the audience, describing how recycled government job postings often carry stale or unnecessary criteria. Recruiters who push back on hiring managers, verify what’s truly required versus preferred, and understand programs well enough to know when a degree can be waived in favor of experience are the ones who fill roles quickly.

Drea, of Magnit Global, pushed back on a few persistent myths about contingent staffing in the cleared world — namely, that it’s less secure or less loyal than direct hire. In reality, she said, contingent placements often face more compliance scrutiny, not less, and some of Magnit’s client conversion rates run in the high 30% range, proof that “try before you buy” arrangements can work well when companies plan for them strategically.

Both panelists agreed that artificial intelligence is reshaping day-to-day recruiting — but mostly at the edges. AI can speed up scheduling, draft outreach, and streamline sourcing. What it can’t do, they argued, is replace the judgment of a recruiter who knows how to ask a candidate the hard questions they don’t want to answer, or write a candidate summary a hiring manager can actually trust. “Those are essentially useless,” Drea said of AI-generated summaries that skip the human read on a candidate’s real fit.

Their advice for recruiters navigating a chaotic few years of shutdowns, hiring surges, and shifting demand: get radically transparent with candidates, understand what actually motivates them, and never stop training on the fundamentals — Boolean search included.
