The nuclear heartland is anxious about the U.S. – Russia nuclear treaty, or more accurately concerned about the missile cuts…and their jobs. Military bases maintaining ICBM silos employ thousands, provide contract work for local businesses and base personnel spend money and pay taxes to the towns.
ICBM silos in Montana (MAFB), Wyoming (WAFB), and North Dakota (MAFB) could be affected due to the treaty, but exactly where the missiles cuts will come from will be revealed in the Defense Department’s Nuclear Posture Review, a comprehensive strategic review of the U.S. nuclear force.
In the past year, area business leaders from those three States have lobbied their congressional delegations arguing that the ICBM silos are relatively cheap to maintain and are more secure compared to bombers and submarines that also carry nuclear weapons.
