While the focus of sequestration may be centered on the Washington, D.C. region, the impact will be felt from coast to coast. Leaders at U.S. Strategic Command, headquartered in Omaha, Ne. are preparing to help the entire Department of Defense as it looks to stretch dollars and streamline capabilities, reports the American Forces Press Service.

As DoD’s “global synchronizer” for capabilities including space, cyberspace, missile defense and intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance, Stratcom plays a pivotal role in today’s most important and high-profile missions. And with a location more than 1,000 miles from the pressures of the nation’s capitol, those at Stratcom have often counted remaining out of the political fray as a key benefit of their flyover state location. That non-partisan bent is a key advantage as Stratcom advises the defense department’s leaders on acquisition and procurement decisions.

“We have a full team here that walks through that analysis each year and looks at current allocations,” said Kenneth Callicutt, the Command’s Director of Capability and Resource Integration. “But our advocacy role also looks to the future,” influencing the Pentagon’s acquisitions and investments in development programs.

As Stratcom looks to the future, there’s no doubt that modernization is likely to bear the brunt of sequestration’s impact. That said, Stratcom maintains both a global and a long-term view they bring to the table in making their recommendations.

“The No. 1 concern, from our perspective, is to ensure we always have the required capabilities,” said John Dodson, Chief of Staff for Capability and Resource Integration. “You always want, whoever your adversary is, to have an upper edge. That’s how it has always been in history and will remain the future. And a big part of that is ensuring that you are state of the art.”
