Whether you’re an active job seeker or just a candidate looking to keep your professional network up-to-date, a little effort can go a long way.

“Reaching out and showing that extra effort can a lot of times pan out to be something fantastic,” LaTonya Walker, director of recruiting at TAD PGS recently told ClearanceJobs.

She also offered these tips for candidates participating in a phone screen with a recruiter:

  • Take a phone screen with a recruiter seriously.
  • Go to a quiet place.
  • Use a wired line.
  • Get dressed up, smile, practice – those little details will make a big difference in the impression you make.

Professionalism is critical at every step of the hiring process.

“The biggest tip that I give candidates is their email address,” said Walker. “Make a very general email address that is appropriate for work.”

Recruiters want to help candidates find the best fit. But they also need candidates to take the time and effort.

“Make sure when you are updating your resume or writing a cover letter, you are really speaking to the nuts and bolts of what that job description is looking for,” said Walker. “Sell yourself – it’s all about selling yourself and highlighting what you would bring to the table – I think that’s always important.”
