This year pundits predicted a new wave of Olympic gambling, fueled by the prevalence of app-based betting programs and new state efforts to legalize sports betting. Whether those predictions led to bets is uncertain but it’s another reminder for security clearance holders – what you do on your smartphone could cost you your security clearance.

China Has an App for That

TikTok may have 1 billion active users – but those users are not using a Department of Defense, NSA, or government device to access it. Despite the prevalence of the addictive video app player and efforts to increase U.S. ownership in the app – it’s still 80% owned by China and 100% controlled by China – and that includes the Chinese intelligence service. Clearance holders are well aware of the TikTok issue – but as more and more download apps for everything from online gambling to trading stocks, it’s important to read the fine print and do some research before you engage.

Don’t Bet Your House

If you gambled on the Olympics, hopefully you didn’t bet the farm (or predict a Simone Biles sweep). Gambling can cause security clearance issues, not because the government is judging your hobby but because it can easily become an addiction. If you find yourself unable to stop, or investing more than you can afford get help. Being proactive is better than trying to hide it. With continuous vetting rolling out to more security clearance holders, you also shouldn’t expect to be able to hide your gambling debt from the government.

Also, make sure any gambling sites you use are reputable. With more states opening up non-sports betting, there are more ways to bet – and lose – your money. Make sure yours are legitimate. We reported this week that the IRS is on the lookout for crypto tax cheats. They’ll also be looking for you if you make a windfall gambling and fail to report it.
