Everyone loves to talk soft skills, but no one right now highlights their value more than Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. While his leadership has been on display for the world, his communication skills have also stood out. Zelensky has used every social media opportunity to his advantage – never shying away from an opportunity to speak and call others to action. His ability to remain agile and use every tool at his disposal is important to note. For the average job seeker, the situation is not as dire as what is being experienced in Ukraine right now, but you can take a few lessons from Zelensky’s playbook. It’s never too late to take a hard look at your soft skills – every meeting, every interaction with a coworker, every new project. You have an opportunity to step up to the plate and grow as an individual. And those soft skills will stand out to recruiters.

Contract Opportunities to Watch

One of the benefits of supporting a larger defense contractor, is that you can have the opportunity in different areas. Leidos was recently awarded a new prime contract to provide biomedical preclinical and development capabilities to support the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The seven-year, multi-award, indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract has an approximate value of up to $545 million across all task areas to be engaged on this program.

“Leidos is proud to support NIAID and provide world-class innovations to treat and prevent infectious, immunologic and allergic diseases,” said Liz Porter, Leidos Health Group president. “For more than two decades, Leidos has supported the U.S. biomedical research community. We are pleased to continue this journey and provide robust biomedical research to reinforce NIAID and its important mission.”

Under the contract, Leidos will provide a suite of biomedical, preclinical and development capabilities and capacity to the NIAID. These include chemistry manufacturing and control, non-clinical research, analytics, bioinformatics, computational biology, biostatistical services and both basic and mechanistic studies. Leidos will also utilize its expertise in machine learning, natural language processing, high-level analytics, analytic programming languages and analysis methods.

Since 2000, Leidos has held several large medical product development contracts with federal government agencies to plan and manage biological and small molecule development programs for various disease indications. These include malaria, spinal muscular atrophy, anthrax, West Nile virus, HIV, polio, Candida and influenza.  Through these contracts, Leidos has provided services from initial concept to clinical implementation, including preclinical activities and clinical trial evaluation.

Cleared Opportunities

SOLUTE, a Sigma Defense company, has been awarded a U.S. Navy Digital Integration Support Cell (DISC) task order to facilitate development security operations (DevSecOps) for NAVAIR’s Minotaur Family of Services (MFoS). SOLUTE will stand up MFoS – which links sensors, cameras, radar and communications equipment into a single system for greater surveillance efficiency – in a secure cloud environment to provide improved scale for access, security, collaboration, performance, test, and validation.

SOLUTE’s work on behalf of MFoS will leverage existing work done as part of the Black Pearl platform to facilitate the systems integration for continuous development, scaled testing, and delivery in a secure cloud DevSecOps environment. The cloud environment specifically leverages the Black Pearl Party Barge, a common environment and DevSecOps baseline allowing for the creation and maintenance of modern software factories. The modular nature of the environment will allow rapid integration of existing environments and enable continuous development, testing, and delivery.

“We are excited to work with NAVAIR to accelerate development of the MFoS program through the Black Pearl DevSecOps environment,” said John Lyons, Executive Vice President of Operations at SOLUTE. “By leveraging groundbreaking software to automate manual functions and make surveillance more effective, we provide our servicemen and women with accurate intelligence faster than ever before.”

MFoS is one of several Navy customers that has transitioned to SOLUTE’s modern DevSecOps environment. This effort is aligned with the “Lift-and-Shift” software modernization paradigm where existing customer tools, applications, data, and general capabilities built in siloed environments shift to Virtual Private Cloud environments that support DoD authorized connectivity. This Research, Development, Test and Evaluation (RDT&E) task order outlines the end-to-end process for ensuring that unique DoD government, educational, and industry (or combinations thereof) software development teams can integrate with government-owned and managed secure commercial cloud environments that provide access to, and usage of, the Black Pearl common environment.
