Extremists across the United States have used bombs in their misguided attempts to accomplish their goals. Whether it’s through bombs mailed to unsuspecting recipients, an exploding RV in the heart of Nashville, or bombing an iconic marathon, bombs have been put almost anywhere for any reason. But Michael Egbert, Bomb-Making Materials Awareness Program (BMAP) Operations Chief at Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), is working to prevent bombs from being made in the first place.

“We go to businesses and we teach them about different types of materials that they sell in their store, whether they be bomb-making materials or explosive precursor chemicals that could build a bomb,” explained Egbert.

Even though these materials are legal to sell and legal to buy, some people are purchasing them for the wrong reasons. “We teach retailers about suspicious activity and suspicious purchasing behavior,” Egbert said. “Things like customers walking in with burn marks on their hands or clothes, or if they’re not from the area, or if they buy a ton of something. These are suspicious behaviors that could lead to a Boston Marathon bombing.”

CISA partners with the FBI and other agencies to spread awareness of improved explosive devices (IEDs) through Operation Flashpoint. “The ultimate goal of Operation Flashpoint is to stop bombing attacks and spread awareness of these materials,” said Egbert.

Through its nationally accredited training program, CISA teaches these skills to tens of thousands of Americans and international partners each year. They’re also developing a bomb threat video targeted at students to help make schools safer.

CISA’s work keeping communities safe is never ending, but they’re ready for the challenge. “We’re a young, dynamic agency and the threat landscape is ever changing. We have an opportunity to create cutting-edge technology and promote better and safe communities because of that,” said Egbert.
