Security topics are in the news, and this week featured a large gathering of professions committed to advancing the national security mission and ensuring the protection of critical national security information. This week’s gathering of the NCMS Society of Security Professionals in New Orleans, LA, included the awarding of the Cogswell Award, an annual security excellence recognition established in 1966.

“The Cogswell Award selection process is rigorous,” a DCSA press release notes. “A DCSA Industrial Security Representative may only nominate facilities that have at a minimum two consecutive superior industrial security review ratings and which show a sustained degree of excellence and innovation in their overall security program management, implementation and oversight. DCSA makes the final selections.”

The companies represent the top .1% of cleared facilities and comprise the companies, organizations and security professionals with the most robust security practices. All cleared contractors are required to meet the standards of the National Industrial Security Program (NISP) in order to do cleared business with the government. Those obtaining the Cogsell awards have gone far beyond the standard to achieve excellence in their craft.

“DCSA’s Cogswell Awards are extremely important to government and industry. These awards recognize and reward superior security performance and they incentivize security teams to try harder/do better than simply meeting standards,” said Charlie Sowell, CEO of SE&M Solutions, a company providing providing professional services and information technology support to personnel vetting, migrant/refugee, and cybersecurity missions. “As a result, the award winning companies represent the very best security programs in cleared industry. Furthermore, the employees and managers who helped get the awards are often recognized with performance bonuses, salary increases, and promotions based on their roles and contributions.”
