If you’re considering a career with the CIA, it’s imperative you arm yourself with the right information. First things first, the hiring process is notoriously long. While this year’s unveiling of the Central Intelligence Agency’s online hiring portal MyLINK was a step in the right direction for modernizing and streamlining the process, wait times for a job offer still take months.

So before you apply, or if you’re already in the midst of the process (background investigation, waiting for your polygraph, or physical and psychological examination) keep these lesser-known requirements in mind.

SOCIAL MEDIA

If you’re thinking about applying or if you have already applied, do not follow the CIA on social media. This includes posting content, following or friending accounts, and liking or sharing content. Even referencing the CIA on your own account is prohibited.

TRAVELING

While you’re not barred from traveling throughout the hiring process, you must never contact the CIA while out of the country. This includes by phone, email, internet, or the mail.

ILLIEGAL SUBSTANCES

Marijuana may be legal in your state, but it’s still illegal on a federal level. If you have consumed marijuana legally within the past 90 days or used any other illegal drug within the last 12 months, you must wait until the timeline from use has passed.

PAST APPLICANTS

If you’ve previously applied for a position within the CIA and weren’t selected, you must wait 12 months to resubmit with an updated resume.

While the CIA’s hiring process may be a long and winding road, the journey is a testament to the importance of the mission and the high caliber of employees. To keep up to date on the latest security and defense news, visit us over at ClearanceJobs.com.
