The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) is stepping up its recruitment efforts by leveraging direct hire authorities (DHAs) to quickly fill critical civilian roles. DHAs streamline the hiring process by eliminating the usual candidate ranking and rating procedures, making it easier for DLA to hire quickly, especially when there is a severe shortage of candidates. This approach has proven effective, with DLA hiring over 4,800 personnel in fiscal year 2024, 36.8% of whom were appointed through DHAs. These hires span a wide range of roles, including contracting specialists, police officers, engineers, and accountants. The agency uses several DHAs, with specific ones tailored to hiring law enforcement personnel or supporting the DLA Pathways to Career Excellence (PACE) program, which helps new hires advance through training and on-the-job experience. One of the key benefits of DHAs is their ability to expedite the hiring process and expand the talent pool, especially for candidates with no prior government or military experience. HR leaders are also encouraging DLA employees to spread the word about available positions, helping to attract more qualified candidates.
Layoffs: Pfizer
In a recent move, Pfizer, one of the world’s largest biopharmaceutical companies, announced it will be laying off 62 employees from its Tampa office in Heights Union. This decision follows the closure of its Pfizer Connect business, which provided patients with information about clinical trials and research opportunities. Pfizer’s move comes shortly after its competitor, Bristol Myers Squibb, revealed plans to cut over half of its Tampa office staff. While the company emphasized that these staffing changes are part of its ongoing efforts to streamline operations and reduce costs, Pfizer also assured those affected that they would receive a generous separation package and support in finding new roles within the company. Despite the difficult decision, Pfizer stated that the process would be handled with transparency, compassion, and respect, in full compliance with applicable laws. This latest round of layoffs highlights the ongoing cost-cutting measures within the biopharmaceutical industry, impacting both local communities and the broader workforce.
