“Why can’t I get a job?” It’s one of the most common questions I hear when I’m out at events. And I get it—when there are thousands of open roles on ClearanceJobs, it can feel confusing and frustrating to still be on the sidelines.
The reality? It usually comes down to three things: status, skills, and mission match.Let’s start with status. Clearance status matters—a lot. While companies can sponsor or upgrade a clearance, most contracts right now are looking for candidates who already have an active clearance, and often at a higher level. It’s not impossible to break in or move up, but being “ready to go” makes you much more competitive.
Next is skills. There are jobs out there, but many of them are for very specific, in-demand skill sets—think IT, cybersecurity, and engineering. If your background doesn’t align, it may be time to upskill or reskill. I also always encourage people to expand their geographic search. Demand can vary widely depending on where you’re looking.
And then there’s timing. This is the piece people overlook the most. The cleared job market is tied to contracts, and contracts are cyclical. Opportunities open, pause, and shift based on mission needs. We’re already seeing movement in areas like DHS, which could mean new roles coming online soon.
So if you’re feeling stuck, know this—you’re not alone. The jobs are there, but it’s about the right match at the right time.
Stay ready, stay informed, and keep refining your approach. And as always, we’re here to help at ClearanceJobs.
