The Alabama Department of Commerce has announced that new defense contracts made to firms with offices or facilities in the Heart of Dixie are directly driving significant hiring and workforce expansion across the state. Moreover, the influx of multi-billion-dollar federal investments has triggered job surges in both advanced manufacturing and high-tech defense systems.
Earlier this month, Lockheed Martin inaugurated its 88,000-square-foot multi-purpose Missile Assembly Building 5 (MAB-5) in Courtland, Alabama. In addition, Blue Origin added 100 new roles in Huntsville to support thruster production for its space and lunar programs.
Huntsville also continues to prepare to host the U.S. Space Command Headquarters at the Redstone Arsenal, bringing an approximately 1,400 additional military and civilian jobs.
Even before that occurs, “The Rocket City” could see further hiring following two additional contract awards.
L3 Harris Wins Army Drone Contract
Aerospace, defense, technology and IT services provider L3 Harris has already been actively recruiting engineers and skilled trades, including machinists and composite technicians amid a massive expansion at its Missile Solutions manufacturing facilities in Huntsville.
Operated under the Aerojet Rocketdyne division, the operations are spread across three primary manufacturing sites, including its Advanced Manufacturing Facility – South (AMF-South), which has a footprint of more than 670,000 square feet near the Huntsville International Airport.
Last week, the company announced that it had received a U.S. Army order worth up to $106 million for the VAMPIRE (Vehicle-Agnostic Modular Palletized ISR Rocket Equipment) counter-unmanned aircraft systems (c-UxS), which will be used to counter hostile drones.
According to L3 Harris, the VAMPIRE can deliver advanced reconnaissance and precision strikes against an adversary’s drones or remotely piloted aircraft. It has been employed in Ukraine since 2023, where it has been deployed as a highly-effective, low-cost counter-drone weapons system. It has logged more than 350,000 operational hours.
“We’ve worked with the Army to understand their needs for new counter-UxS systems that can be quickly assembled, delivered, set-up and fired,” said Tom Kirkland, President, Targeting & Sensor Systems, Communications & Spectrum Dominance, L3Harris. “VAMPIRE is effective at hunting and engaging drone threats affordably, which enables U.S. armed forces to sustain reliable defense of its personnel and infrastructure.”
Production of the VAMPIRE systems is undertaken at the AMF facilities in The Rocket City.
$31 Million Contract Awarded for Polish Missile Defense
Northrop Grumman Systems Corp. also received a $31 million contract for maintenance to NATO ally Poland’s advanced air and missile command system. The contract modification, awarded by the Army Contracting Command and announced on June 10, will provide sustainment for the WISLA Integrated Air and Missile Defense Battle Command System, bringing the total cumulative value of that contract to approximately $78 million.
“Work will be performed in Huntsville, Alabama, with an estimated completion date of Dec. 31, 2029. Fiscal 2026 Foreign Military Sales (Poland) funds in the amount of $30,759,214 were obligated at the time of the award. Army Contracting Command, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, is the contracting activity,” the Pentagon’s contract announcement stated.
The WISLA is Poland’s national medium-range air and missile defense system, built around the U.S.-made Patriot missile batteries, and supported by the advanced Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS) developed by Northrop Grumman to intercept ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and aircraft.
Poland is the first U.S. NATO ally to fully integrate the IBCS into its air defenses fully. It became “combat-ready” and reached Full Operational Capability (FOC) last December.
