At ClearanceJobs Connect Colorado, DHI Group CEO Art Zeile — who oversees both Dice and ClearanceJobs — traced an unlikely throughline from the Colorado gold rush of 1858 to today’s AI-driven hiring boom.

Zeile argued that Colorado’s rise as a tech and defense hub wasn’t an accident of culture, but a byproduct of geography and deliberate investment. The state’s central location and distance from the coasts made it the natural choice for the nation’s first intercontinental ballistic missile program in 1955 and for NORAD’s hardened Cheyenne Mountain complex a few years later.

An IBM manufacturing plant near Boulder later seeded dozens of storage companies, while a 1953 land donation to the federal government created the labs that became NIST and NCAR — helping explain why more than 70% of Boulder’s adult population holds a bachelor’s degree. Denver’s railroad crossroads made it a natural path for fiber optic cable, which cable pioneer John Malone leveraged to build a satellite-downlink empire. Later, former geologist and brewery founder John Hickenlooper used arts investment to attract tech talent as Denver’s mayor — a strategy that eventually carried him to the U.S. Senate.

From there, Zeile turned to hiring data. AI skills now appear in 75% of tech job postings, up from roughly 10% at the start of 2025. Tech giants including Microsoft, AWS, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google Cloud are pouring billions into “Forward Deployed Engineer” programs. Meanwhile, more than 10,000 new defense tech companies have launched in the past two years, fueled by rising NATO spending commitments.

Zeile cautioned that consolidation is inevitable — roughly 70% of venture-backed companies typically fail — but the underlying demand for cleared and technical talent shows no signs of slowing.
