An article at ere.net last week reveals that recruiters have a lot to learn from a potentially unexpected source – the military. From the Royal Marines to the U.S. Air Force, military organizations are applying some pretty savvy social media in their recruiting efforts.

Who’s Hiring
Sage North America’s SMB Hiring Outlook Survey reports that 25 percent of small businesses have hired or will hire in 2013. Seven percent will decrease their staff, and 47 percent expect it to stay the same.
Macomb County, Mich. is looking to be the “Defense Capital of the Midwest.” The county has been chosen to lead a state-wide initiative to bring in new defense business to the state. The Macomb County Department of Planning and Economic Development received a $231,000 grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to launch a statewide strategy for support of existing defense companies and to also attract new defense firms to the state.

Who’s Acquiring
Global Dynamic Consulting acquired HR initiatives in a deal that closed May 1. The move is another example of firms with largely federal business branching out into the private sector. Global Dynamic Consulting mainly targets federal subcontractors, HR initiatives focuses on start-up and technology companies.
MB Aerospace, the international aerospace engineering group, has acquired Delta Industries, an aero-engine component manufacturing business in Hartford, Conn.
Who’s Moving
SRA International is looking to a move to the ‘burbs in order to cut costs. The government services firm announced it would be relocating its headquarters from Fair Lakes to Chantilly, Va. in 2015. It will also reduce its space requirements as a way to cut costs. The government has looked to similar measures, consolidating office spaces and reducing the number of high-cost leases in locations such as Crystal City.
