Cleared to carry? Your security clearance application requires you to list your police record – if you have one – and specifically inquires about crimes involving violence; guns or explosives; and drugs or alcohol. This doesn’t indicate some government gun bias, but the importance of the trustworthiness and good judgment of the national security workforce. If you’re willing to circumvent gun laws, that can be seen as a much bigger issue with authority and the ability to maintain safety.
Gun-related issues, like all issues, can certainly be mitigated with passage of time. There are few things that will always result in security clearance denial. But if you’re a gun owner, and security clearance holder, you should pay particular attention to following the law at all times.
