Last week, when we weren’t talking about the coronavirus we gave you the 411 on what to expect during initial security cleared employee training (spoiler: including how it is impacted by the coronavirus). Unfortunately, the paperwork doesn’t stop with the SF-86. Newly cleared employees will need to sign nondisclosure agreements, and obtain training on how to properly protect classified information and identify insider threats.

New Employee Security Clearance Training and Onboarding: Your company’s facility security officer (FSO) or security specialist is responsible for conducting this initial training. If you find yourself unsure of what you need to complete, or when, don’t hesitate to ask. Training will include knowledge of your company’s specific classification policies and access, but also training on sensitive but unclassified information – controlled unclassified information is a specific category of information (think FOUO), and knowing how to properly protect it is important to your company and agency.

Training in the Age of Coronavirus

Wondering if you’ll still need to conduct or participate in annual training even if you’re facility is shut down due to coronavirus? Guidance published by the Defense Counterintelligence Security Agency (DCSA) clarifies that annual security training may be punted until your company or agency resumes normal operations.
