The Department of Defense conducts more than 95% of background investigations. If the DoD processed your investigation, you’ll need to submit a privacy act request to the DCSA Freedom of Information and Privacy Act office. You can find the form and contact information for submitting your request at the DCSA.mil website, or at ClearanceJobs.com. Your request can be emailed, faxed or mailed. Regardless of how you submit your request, you’ll need to provide photocopies of two forms of identification. Examples include a birth certificate, U.S. military ID, driver’s license or passport.
Why would you want a copy of your background investigation? If your clearance is suspended, having a copy of your background investigation may provide important details to help you in your appeal. Even if you’re not having clearance issues, having a copy of your background investigation – including field notes – may help you decide who you don’t need to send a Christmas card to next year, depending upon what your neighbors had to tell the investigator.
