The security industry is evolving rapidly—and it’s no longer just about guards, gates, and access badges. Advances in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and integrated technology are transforming how organizations protect people, facilities, and critical infrastructure.

Don Erickson, CEO of the Security Industry Association (SIA), joined the podcast to talk about the forces shaping the modern security ecosystem.

SIA represents more than 1,700 companies across the global security industry, including technology manufacturers, security integrators, service providers, and end users. Erickson explained that many of the systems people interact with daily—from badge access in federal buildings to advanced surveillance tools—are developed by companies within this ecosystem.

One of the biggest drivers of change is the rapid growth of AI-enabled security technologies. Video surveillance systems, for example, increasingly use AI to detect unusual behavior, identify threats, and improve situational awareness. While these tools offer powerful capabilities, Erickson emphasized the importance of responsible implementation, including transparency, ethical use, and strong privacy protections.

Another major trend is the growing convergence between physical security and cybersecurity. As security technologies become more connected, protecting systems from cyber threats is just as critical as securing physical spaces. Many companies now incorporate “cybersecurity by design” and “privacy by design” principles into products from the earliest stages of development.

These shifts are also creating new career opportunities. Erickson noted that the security field is often misunderstood as traditional physical security work, when in reality it now includes roles in engineering, cybersecurity, analytics, project management, and technology integration.

“The mission of the security industry is to protect people and assets,” Erickson said. “And today that mission increasingly relies on innovation.”

For professionals interested in national security, emerging technology, or infrastructure protection, the modern security industry offers a growing range of career paths.
