Earlier this month, the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency (DCSA) announced a new public-facing interface, the Individual Engagement Platform (IEP), which was to improve transparency and streamline interactions between the government and individuals undergoing personnel vetting.
According to the DCSA, “the IEP allows individuals to access near real-time information about their current and previous personnel vetting applications.”
Adding Customer Service
Looking for a job can be mentally and physically exhausting, and that is true even when you know what type of job you are seeking. Job searches require an adaptable timeline, planning, and lots of patience.
When a security clearance is added to the mix, the process can be even more stressful, invasive, and challenging. As ClearanceJobs explained last year, the security clearance process isn’t for the thin-skinned.
The process requires what has been described as an “intrusive investigation,” requires strict adjudicative guidelines, and often has delayed timelines, with the process taking months or years. All of that can lead to anxiety and uncertainty regarding employment.
Adding Actual Customer Service
What the security clearance process hasn’t typically had is anything resembling customer service, but the DCSA’s IEP is meant to address that and remove some of the stress for candidates. It is meant to act as a single, transparent portal for individuals to track their security investigation status, self-report information, and engage in secure, two-way communication with the agency.
“The IEP has a Status Tracker feature that provides applicants with visibility into the progress of their cases, reducing inquiries regarding case status and enhancing the overall customer experience,” the DCSA explained.
That capability was further meant to align with the goals of Trusted Workforce 2.0 (TW 2.0) to modernize personnel vetting processes and improve efficiency across the federal government.
DSCA also confirmed that, as of March 5, the automated eApp email for new cases would include a link to the IEP Status Tracker, enabling individuals to access their case information easily.
“Over the next several months, DCSA plans to expand the features of the Status Tracker and its user base, ensuring the platform continues to meet the needs of applicants and stakeholders,” the agency added.
Adding Customer Service is Necessary
DCSA will also benefit those who work at the agency, reducing stress and demanding workloads. DCSA is the largest investigative service provider in the federal government, supporting more than 100 federal entities. It also oversees 12,500 cleared facilities under the National Industrial Security Program (NISP) and relies on several directorates to ensure the security of our nation’s technologies and information.
It provides personnel vetting to deliver efficient and effective background investigations, continuous vetting, and adjudications.
The agency’s mission is to safeguard the integrity and trustworthiness of the federal and contractor workforce by conducting background investigations for 95% of the federal government, including 105 departments and agencies. It also adjudicates 70% of the federal government’s adjudicative determinations.
The EIP will be a component of the NBIS, enhancing its transparency and streamlining its interactions. According to DCSA, this will include:
- System Migration Completion: The transition of remaining legacy systems, such as PSS, to JWCC will ensure full integration and operational readiness, enhancing scalability and security.
- AI Pilots: Artificial intelligence (AI) pilots are being deployed to automate risk triage, improve alert accuracy, and reduce reliance on manual processes.
- Expanded Data Sources: Efforts are underway to integrate additional data sources, providing a more comprehensive view of personnel risk and enhancing decision-making.
- Enhanced Automation: Investments in automation will streamline workflows, improve scalability, and reduce delays in issue resolution, enabling NBIS to handle growing data volumes more efficiently.
- Self-Reporting Improvements: Enhanced self-reporting requirements will empower individuals to proactively update their information, supplementing external data and improving risk assessments.
