A sergeant major in the Army beginning to contemplate retirement, a young reservist currently activated with the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization, a defense contractor who just moved from Kansas City and a husband and wife team – these are just a few of the individuals who ran the Army Ten Miler with the ClearanceJobs running team.
Runners were gifted with a great race day – beautiful sunny skies with a slight chill in the air. The race made a beautiful path from the Pentagon into Washington, D.C., down Independence Ave. along the Tidal Basin and back across the Memorial Bridge. Twelve runners participated in the ClearanceJobs running team. As a race sponsor, ClearanceJobs also met thousands more runners at the two-day Health and Fitness Expo at the D.C. Armory.
Elani Rothlisberger ran the shadow race in Afghanistan, and unlike the D.C. runners faced temps in the 40s – and a 4:30 a.m. race start time. She posed for a post-race photo with her command sergeant major and other members of her unit.
The motto of the ClearanceJobs team? ‘My training is classified.’ Which is a pretty fair assessment, concerning many of the runners admitted their training was so classified, they couldn’t talk about it (or in some cases, do it!)
The Army Ten Miler is a race that always sells out quickly, leaving many would-be runners shut out. The reasons behind the popularity are many – 10 miles is an ambitious, yet doable distance, said runners. The location and run-route are beautiful, and it’s inspiring to be a part of a race that includes Wounded Warriors and wheelchair athletes.
ClearanceJobs runner Sandy Martinez said she ran the race to help motivate her to get back in shape as she reenters active duty. As a reservist, she maintains a civilian job and uses ClearanceJobs.com to help keep her tuned into the job market and relevant news in her industry, she said.
