Q: My family has a criminal background but I no longer have any connections with them. Will this affect future clearances?

William H. Henderson, FEDCAS, replies:

The relevant portion of the Adjudicative Guidelines is Guideline E (Personal Conduct), which makes “association with persons involved in criminal activity” a potentially disqualifying condition. If you do not associate with your relatives who are involved in criminal activity and you cannot be influenced by them, it shouldn’t negatively affect your eligibility for a clearance.
