The Department of Energy announced via email last week that the personal information of more than 53,000 employees may have been breached in a hack that occurred in late July. The breach may have exposed the names and social security numbers of current and past employees.

The Department of Energy announced that it would be notifying affected employees between now and the end of the month. The Department has not been commenting on the attack, and best guess is it is staying quite busy attempting to contact both current and former employees who were affected. The agency did say that no classified data was targeted in the attack. A report in CNET noted that hackers were able to gain access to a human resources system that included personal information such as payroll data.
