Recruiting the Online Student

As colleges lose the standard brick and mortar structure, it’s important that your college recruiting program keeps pace with the changing times. Ere.net points out the need to think through ways to target the passive students who might not go through the college career center system.

Job Search Goes Mobile

It’s a mobile world out there, so how mobile-friendly is your website? Change is hard, but it could be the difference between an open position and a filled position. Ere.net explains the importance of going mobile and ways to capture attention by being graphically engaging and concise.

In-Person versus On-line

Instead of saying it, just do it. Inc.com explains how over-used terms like “motivate”, “creative”, “passionate”, or “innovative” can be. The word loses its meaning when nearly every company or candidate claims to be creative and innovative.  At some point in the online and social media era, we stopped talking like our real in-person selves. So, use real, everyday terms when promoting your organization…whether the conversation is online or face-to-face.

2014 Sequestration Effect on Jobs

Sequestration news was a little quieter for a bit, but as the next fiscal year gets underway, the sequestration drumbeat is getting noisier. With no alternative budget in place, it appears everyone is waiting to see what kind of damage 2014 will actually bring. Lawmakers are starting to name companies and cities that will feel the force of the 2014 defense cuts. National Defense Magazine outlines the defense industry job loss trends and points out that unfortunately, the smaller, no-name companies are the ones that are really getting hurt.

Discount Recruiting Fees

Reston, VA-based startup, Sl8z, likens its proposed recruiting business model to a department store’s discount arm. Sl8z’s founder, Glenn Fox, wants to provide small- to mid-sized companies in the technology and life sciences arena first-class candidates at an affordable price. Instead of the typical 20 percent recruiting fee, Sl8z proposes a $20,000 minimum fee for executive positions. Fox explains that Sl8z provides a revenue opportunity for the unselected highly-qualified candidates recruiters have spent time locating and screening.

Who’s Growing

Is the aerospace industry the next big market for defense contractors? Some seem to think the vast commercial satellite market is the place to be right now – especially with Pentagon spending on the decline. The new aerospace initiatives are a great way for defense companies to stay ahead of the innovation curve. Apparently, aerospace capabilities can also give defense companies a cool factor recruiting edge.

Who’s Firing

Lockheed Martin is still trimming. The defense contractor plans to layoff 4,000 workers from multiple US facilities. The current locations facing closure are Akron, OH; Newtown, PA; Horizon City, TX; Goodyear, AZ; as well as four buildings in Sunnydale, CA. Lockheed has trimmed 30,000 jobs since 2008.

Ft. Rucker-based AFS is relieved to only lay off less than 100 employees instead of the originally planned 460 employees. The lobbying efforts of the employees and union have reduced the layoffs at Army Fleet Support. The layoffs are slated to go into effect right before Christmas.
