Have security clearance – will travel? Relocation isn’t an option for everyone, but if you expand your geographic horizons, you’ll find your job opportunities open up, as well.

Despite the ‘S’ word – sequestration – the Washington, D.C. metro remains the hottest market for cleared professionals. Take your pick between Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia – they all offer a diversity of opportunities. When relocating keep in mind the higher-than-average cost of living as well as the commute.

Want to get about as far away from D.C. as you can without needing a passport? Consider Sierra Vista, Arizona and the intelligence industry that serves the Fort Huachuca military base. Other great options are Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin, Texas. Careers range from cyber to military health.

Want the best bang for your buck when it comes to relocation? Be open to opportunities you weren’t expecting. Cleared jobs in locations like Connecticut or Ohio may be more interesting – and more lucrative – than you expected. A defense job off the beaten path may be more difficult for a recruiter to fill – and may give you more leverage at the negotiating table.

Being willing to relocate can be a boon to your job search. Weigh the options and consider the opportunities, and you just might see the value in packing your bags.
