If you have an active clearance and just earned a college degree, you don’t necessarily need a long work history on your resume to land second cleared careers. A new study by the University of California recently compiled a list of hot careers for new graduates. Among the top 10 career fields, four are stand-outs for security clearance requirements.

The report selected career fields based on current employment, projected growth through 2020, median salary and workplace environment. It also included another element – the “bridgeability factor,” meaning the odds for new college graduates to bridge into these careers by learning new skills or adding one to two years of education.

The following list made the cut. For new veterans who are also new graduates, these cleared careers are in demand throughout government and among government contractors.

Management Analyst

Management analysts find ways to improve an organization’s efficiency. They are responsible for collecting and analyzing data about what’s working in the company, what isn’t, and which areas may be most efficient or sluggish. That data is then used by the analyst to recommend changes. Good communication skills are a plus, since management analysts write reports and make presentations. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median salary is about $78,000. Those who take these jobs as consultants earn slightly more, with median salaries of about $88,000.

Computer systems analysts

These careers center on an organization’s current computer systems, procedures and the design of information systems to ensure they operate efficiently. Computer systems analysts use a combination of business knowledge and IT skills. The market continues to be good, and the demand is strong enough to support hiring new graduates. This is due in part, to the government, where there’s an ongoing shift toward cybersurveillance and expansion of healthcare-related computer system needs. Median salaries are about $83,800

Software Developers – Applications

On the applications side, software developers look more at client usage when it comes to creating, testing and modifying general computer applications software or specialized programs. Applications developers design and customize software to improve operational efficiency, sometimes analyzing and designing databases or coordinating database development as part of a team. The BLS puts the mean salary at $96,000.

Bachelor’s degrees in computer science and math are both appealing to hiring managers, and the growth rate is expected to be better than average; more than 30 percent by 2020. Salaries are also better than average, about $102,550.
