If you are reading this, chances are you’ve known about Microsoft for a long time. In fact, you’ve probably used several Microsoft products already today; it’s a part of your regular life. But for how familiar Microsoft is, you may not be familiar with the Microsoft Services organization or the kind of customers it serves. For many U.S. security clearance holders, Microsoft Services may just be the next exciting stop on your career journey. Here are some of the ways that Microsoft sets itself apart – both as a government services provider and as an employer.
What Is Microsoft Services?
The Microsoft Services organization hosts technology solutions – like webmail, storage, and calendar – for both consumers and businesses. It offers a wide range of consulting and support services, including for many U.S. government clients. Currently, Microsoft is looking for applicants with active security clearances to join their team as Premier Field Engineers (also known as Consultants or Title Engineers).
“Premier Field Engineers (PFE) serve as deep technical advisors to Enterprise Customers while delivering unique value,” explains LeVay, Recruiter for the Microsoft Services Organization. “PFEs need experience managing complex projects and understanding the needs of the customer. End-to-end app development lifecycle providing guidance, assistance, and technical leadership to development teams.”
Microsoft Offers Flexibility, Continuous Learning, and Mission
One of the most essential parts to job satisfaction is also one of the least tangible: company culture. That’s one of the secrets to how Microsoft sets itself apart.
“We fundamentally believe that we need a culture founded in a growth mindset,” says LeVay. “It starts with a belief that everyone can grow and develop; that potential is nurtured, not pre-determined; and that anyone can change their mindset. It is inclusive and open to ideas. We are helping to lead the industry.”
Jamal, a Senior Consultant in Reston, VA agrees. “Microsoft values the contributions of all its employees. We value continuous learning and our corporate values prioritize diversity and inclusion. This organizational support further emboldens me to learn, grow and bring my very best to work each and every day. Obviously, this feeling of inclusion positively impacts my work, which positively impacts my customer success.”
Microsoft’s value of the individual translates into some really tangible benefits for its employees – like parental leave benefits and flexible work arrangements.
“The best thing about my job is the flexibility,” explains Laura, a Senior Consultant in the D.C. area. “I am not chained to a chair in a windowless basement. Instead, I am offered the flexibility to move around to different projects within government customers. In this way, I am always challenged and learning – as well as providing modernization and transformation to government customers.”
How Can You Join the Microsoft Services Team?
So what’s the secret to joining the Microsoft Services team? According to LeVay, the “tricks” to a successful interview are pretty simple.
“First and foremost, be prepared. Research the role and the company and demonstrate a passion for our mission to ‘Empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more.’ Also, be prepared to tell us about yourself – key roles, what you’ve learned, and personal experience. Ask questions.”
And there’s one stand-out interview technique that literally anyone can ace: write a thank you note.
“Not many candidates follow up with a ‘thank you.’ It can make a huge impression.”
One last tip if you’re looking to become a part of the Microsoft team: “Let’s be clear: skills, talent, and passion for our mission are still drivers for landing a job at Microsoft and they always will be,” emphasizes LeVay. “We look at your passion for our mission, your values and culture, communication skills, ability to engage quickly and professionally, and a desire to solve customer problems.”
