If you’re looking for a new job or location and enjoy history, check out these great historical locations for your next potential duty assignment. Not everyone is an outdoor enthusiast – some like to walk the streets that tell a story. So, whether you want to be a contractor near a military base or you’re weighing in on your next assignment, some locations have a little more of a historical feel than the others.

Charleston, SC

As one of the oldest cities in the country, history lovers adore Charleston. Through challenging times and peace, Charleston has prospered from 1670, just after King Charles granted Carolina lands to eight loyal proprietors. Downtown, near the battery you’ll find homes that still exist from that era. With horse drawn carriages taking you through the French Quarter, in Charleston’s original walled city, you will witness American history at its finest. If you are into military history, you can catch a ferry to Fort Sumter where the first shots of the Civil War rang out. There is always something to do, as you are not far from intercoastal waterways, museums, beaches, historic homes, and tremendous food and drink.

The historic area has more than 90,000 active-duty military, reserves, government employees, contractors and dependents. You will find multiple military locations, including US Coast Guard Base Charleston, Charleston AFB, and Joint Base Charleston With all military services represented and most major contractors in the area, you have ample opportunity for employment. The Naval Information Warfare Center – Atlantic is headquartered at the Naval Support Activity, which is part of Joint Base Charleston. The center is staffed by almost 5,000 personnel. Southeast Virginia

If you enjoy learning about the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, viewing historic homes and national parks, Southeast Virginia is a mecca for American history. Less than an hour away from most military bases, you will find Virginia’s “historical triangle” consisting of three of America’s most historical locations. Jamestown is a fascinating journey, as it was one of our country’s first settlements dating back to 1610. During the colonial period, nearby Williamsburg was the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia until 1780 and has a wonderful historic district. Yorktown completes the “historical triangle” where its battlefield was the site of the last major battle of the Revolutionary War. Nearby Petersburg National Battlefield Park has its trailhead located near the Army Logistic Center on Fort Lee.

If you are navy, you may already know about this gem of a location, with Naval Station Norfolk, Naval Air Station Oceana, Naval Air Station Oceana Dam Neck, with medical center and shipyards nearby. But the army has Fort Eustis and Fort Story nearby, along with other facilities. With over fifteen hundred open contract positions in Norfolk alone, you should be able to find work in the area. Leidos, Lockheed Martin, L3 Harris, Booz Allen, PAE are just some of the contract companies having open positions on Clearnancejobs.com in the area. 

Massachusetts

Want to step into the past? From the Freedom Trail, to Beacon Hill and the Boston Tea Party Floating Museum, something historic awaits on almost every corner of the great city of Boston. Originally called Tremontaine for the three hills in the area, in the 1630’s Puritans renamed the area Boston, after a town in Lincolnshire, England. You get a fantastic understanding of the revolutionary story, riding the “Hop on Hop Off” bus. There are plenty of ghost tours along with wonderful homes to explore, such as the Paul River house. With tremendous history of their own, you will find Salem, Plymouth, Lexington and Concord less than 45 minutes away.

If you prefer the water, Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island is only 90 minutes to the south with multiple Coast Guard Stations nearby.
