Boeing is a leading global aerospace company, but the company does so much more than build airplanes. Roxanne Wood, CEO of Boeing Intelligence and Analytics, sat down with Clearance Jobs to discuss her role at Boeing, how the Intelligence and Analytics arm relates to the greater Boeing Company, and the experience Boeing brings to national security.

Boeing Intelligence and Analytics is a wholly owned subsidiary of Boeing, and the company ultimately reports to Boeing. They’re a smaller company that focuses on medium-sized contracts, so every person and every position is vital.

“We’re very people-focused, because without our people we really don’t have anything,” explains Roxanne. “People are doing all the good work for our customers and for us.”

While Boeing is a well-recognized name, many don’t recognize the wide variety of roles the company plays in national security. When asked about what misconceptions people may have about Boeing and the Boeing Intelligence and Analytics arm, Roxanne said, “Most people probably think we build airplanes, and we don’t! We’re considered the intelligence arm of Boeing, and we’re very people-based. We don’t offer a lot of products.” She also noted that while Boeing may seem like a large, slow-moving company, the intelligence arm is smaller and more agile, able to move quickly as needed.

Another aspect of being a part of the greater Boeing Company is the ability for employees to move into a variety of roles. “If you work in BIA, you can work in the whole software development cycle and business development support,” Roxanne said. “We run the whole gamut of running a business. If you want to work on the larger platform-based work that big Boeing has, you have opportunities to move into that area. You can be an architect or work with hardware, software, or strategy. You can do so many things at BIA and Boeing. It’s amazing. I don’t see that in a whole lot of other companies.”

Part of what makes Boeing a great place to work is its willingness to help employees reach their career objectives. Through training, mentorship programs, and a commitment to listening to their employees, Boeing truly works with each employee on an individual level to make sure they’re reaching their career aspirations.

This commitment also includes Boeing’s Seek, Speak, and Listen and diversity initiatives. Through these, Boeing aims to ensure every employee is valued, heard, and supported.

Roxanne also had wise advice for women desiring to be in leadership. “If you get to a point as a female and you feel like you’re not a valued person anymore, it’s probably not you. You need to get out and make a career change. Take the chance and make a change, and you will grow!”
