Following its recent acquisition of Axim Geospatial, NV5 completed the acquisition of L3Harris Technologies, Inc.’s Visual Information Solutions commercial geospatial technology and software business (“VIS”). In 2023, Axim Geospatial was awarded $9 million in national security geospatial contracts by intelligence agencies and the Department of Defense. NV5’s L3Harris VIS acquisition, adds more to their geospatial data solutions.
“This acquisition supports NV5’s expansion in a subscription-based geospatial product and service model and strengthens our role in supporting the nation’s defense and intelligence communities through geospatial information management and analytics,” said Dickerson Wright, PE, Chairman and CEO of NV5. “As the only provider of software solutions to analyze over 200 geospatial data types and comprehensive in-house LiDAR, topobathymetric LiDAR, and full ocean depth sonar capabilities, NV5 has built a distinct competitive advantage and robust platform to support accelerated organic growth.”
The VIS acquisition includes 16 U.S. Patents for geospatial data analytics. NV5 will also receive ownership of an additional 13 U.S. and non-U.S. Trademark Registrations for leading geospatial software applications with approximately 500,000 global users. These software products include prominent applications such as ENVI, IDL, Jagwire, Amplify, and Helios, which are relied upon by the United States Department of Defense and federal civilian agencies for the analysis and management of geospatial data.
Layoffs: General Atomics
Maker of the Predator and Reaper military drones, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems is planning 376 layoffs at its Poway and San Diego facilities. According to their Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice, the job cuts go into effect June 5. General Atomics Aeronautical Systems said in a statement that there was “a reduction in force involving a small number of its employees. These reductions were made to balance resources with business requirements.”
While none of their facilities are closing, the contractor does expect the layoffs to be permanent. The Predator and Reaper have been predominantly used by the U.S. Air Force over the last 15 years.
Hiring: IRS
In its recently released Strategic Operating Plan, the IRS outlined their future hiring goals. And as part of the plan to replace its aging workforce, the IRS plans to hire over 10,000 employees this fiscal year, and then another 10,000 in FY24. But the IRS also needs to update its legacy IT systems, offer support to taxpayers, as well as, collect unpaid taxes.
“For years, the agency has not had the resources to provide the service people deserve. Across all of our operations we’ve seen the impact. We’ve lost employees and seen our resources stretched thin with new mandates and an increasingly complex economy,” IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said. “The IRS looks forward to demonstrating how the actions under this plan will translate into real improvements for taxpayers.”
One key piece of the onboarding puzzle for the IRS is streamlining their hiring process – a fight for the U.S. federal government, as a whole.

Rebellion Defense was recently awarded an order for Rebellion Nova to provide continuous cybersecurity testing to the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).
NNSA will use Rebellion Nova to defend critical infrastructure systems. More specifically, Nova will augment cyber defenders by emulating adversarial attacks on-demand, at a scale unachievable through human intervention alone, and pinpoint vulnerabilities that pose the greatest mission consequence.
The contract follows the release of the National Cybersecurity Strategy, in which the President declared defending critical infrastructure as the top priority, and marks Rebellion’s expansion into the federal civilian market.
