There’s only so much you can learn about a company before your first day. But successful companies know that ensuring new hires are compatible with the culture begins before extending an offer. Lumen takes a collaborative approach to the interview process, resulting in onboarding employees who are holistically the right fit.
LUMEN’S EMPLOYEE-FOCUSED CULTURE
“Lumen has an awesome culture,” Senior Director of Base/Program Management Tom Sewolt explained. “We’re very employee-focused, and we really want to enable the human part of being employed anywhere.”
Charlene Sloan, Senior Manager of Federal Programs, chose Lumen over other companies, despite the plethora of positions available elsewhere. “Lumen seemed to really hire me for what I brought to the table right then and there,” Sloan explained.
“But also, for what I would bring to the table in the future. They saw my potential, and they invested in me. It’s a really good feeling.”
INVESTING IN THE TEAM HOLISTICALLY
Sloan said it’s more than just being valued as an employee; Lumen cares about who she is as a person. Shortly after being hired, her boss discovered she volunteers her time at an animal rescue charity.
“Now, the company sends a check to that charity every month to support the cause,” she shared. “Which, to me, goes way above and beyond just matching a dollar for dollar. They’re valuing my time, the time that I spend volunteering, and that just means the world to me.”
DYNAMIC WORKDAYS AT LUMEN
While day-to-day tasks vary depending on position, Acie Abner, Senior Manager of Federal Programs detailed what a typical workday looks like at a leading technology and communications company.
“A typical workday for me at Lumen is really coming in and finding out what it is that’s on task for the team for the day,” Abner explained. “And then working through plans to get to those problems as quickly as possible, prioritizing what the customer needs are for that given day.”
Work at Lumen is rarely static. Working with government agencies and contractors takes dedication to each customer’s mission and the ability to flow with the inevitable changes in the national security space.
“Every day for us is listening to what that direction is and making sure that we’re there to serve whatever that new purpose is or that prioritized item,” he shared.
The variety of clients and industries coupled with the collaboration with colleagues is Abner’s favorite part of working at Lumen.
“Coming to work with the people and listening to what it is that they have to offer and all of us working toward that together makes it a really comfortable place to come and give your all for the government customers.”
