Who’s Hiring:
It’s a Seller’s Market for Security Professionals
When it comes to hiring highly skilled security experts, most recruiters are approaching it wrong, according to speakers at recent information security events. With more open positions that skilled (and cleared) talent to fill them, qualified candidates have their choice in where to work. Recruiters may work their companies out of the running if they fail to understand that information security – whether offensive or defensive – is a creative pursuit, said Winn Schwartau, chairman of MAD Security. Recruiters should also realize that highly skilled and cleared candidates won’t be searching for jobs on social networks such as LinkedIn, but keep a tighter hold on their resume details and credentials.
Who’s Firing:
Sequestration Fears and BAE Layoffs
BAE plans to layoff 95 employees in its San Francisco office, according to an announcement. No word on which employees will be cut, or which job sectors. BAE employs more than 88,000 across its global offices.
Defense contractors including BAE, Lockheed Martin to EADS are warning they will be issuing Workers Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notices to employees if Congress doesn’t reach a deal to prevent sequestration. The Department of Labor issued guidance that defense contractors would not need to send out the notices, expected to be a political punch as they would go to thousands of employees just prior to election day. The defense contractors are saying that without clear direction from OMB, DoD or the White House, they have no choice.
Who’s Merging:
EADS and BAE Systems Confirm Merger Talks
EADS and BAE Systems said Wednesday that they are discussing a $42 billion merger to create a European aerospace and defense company. Under the proposed deal, EADS shareholders would own 60 percent of the combined group, with BAE shareholders owning the rest.
