Dissatisfied with your job? Turns out U.S. federal employees aren’t the only ones! A recent Gallup poll showed that only 13 percent of employees worldwide like their job. Results are gathered from more than 140 countries. While not all employees report feeling actively disengaged, many report feeling unmotivated.

Change is the name of the game. Changes within an organization can become a retention nightmare. Leadership changes can especially rock the boat. Help employees navigate leadership changes with Washington Post’s helpful tips on getting to know a new boss.  What are some other ways to help employees adjust to leadership additions or changes?

Behind every cloud there’s a silver lining, right? According to ere.net, the time is now to recruit federal employees. Those candidates who wouldn’t talk before are certain to want to converse now. Focus on candidates that have the agility to switch gears to life outside the federal government, but who bring valuable knowledge and expertise to the table. Take advantage of the current situation and act quickly.

It is hard to feel like a pawn in the political game, but it seems likely that back pay is a go for federal employees. For contractors who cannot continue working during the shutdown, the fallout might be even worse. How much leave can employees use or borrow during the shutdown, and at what point does a mandatory vacation stop being okay? How is your company working to retain employees impacted by the shutdown?

Who’s Moving

Engineering Services Network just won a $2.4 million U.S. Navy task order. The group is tasked with the installation, testing, and transition of the Navy C51 systems. The task order is part of a larger relocation effort. Engineering Services Network will be moving Navy Cyber Forces from Norfolk, VA to Suffolk, VA.

A division of Curtiss Wright is moving its operations from New Jersey to Bethlehem, PA by December 2014. The company’s older building prompted the move, and with many employees and vendors already located in PA, the move should be a win. This company division services the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, and Military Sealift Command.

Who’s Acquiring

Despite sequestration, defense cuts, and the government shutdown, buyout firm GTCR LLC was looking for a buyer for Six3 Systems, and it found CACI. CACI is looking to grow in the intelligence, cybersecurity, and reconnaissance market with its acquisition of Six3. The $820 million acquisition price tag is CACI’s largest acquisition to date. Six3 is CACI’s 57th acquisition.

The aerospace industry continues to pare down to operate more efficiently and meet changing demands. RBC Bearings announced its acquisition of Turbine Components Inc. TCI adds a repair station offering to the RBC services.

Murky political waters equal hazy views of future revenue and profit prospects for defense companies. Despite having the cash, Comtech Telecommunications, a NY-based satellite ground equipment manufacturer, has been unable to move forward with any acquisitions. Without a clear picture of the U.S. government budget, companies are unable to finalize projections and move forward with acquisitions – a consolidation process that logically should be occurring.

Who’s Growing

Tyson’s Corner is growing, but in these uncertain economic times, will the ginormous new buildings be filled with tenants?  Built on top of the metro, the buildings are sure to attract some. However, if it was unsafe for government offices to reside over unattended/unarmed parking garages in Crystal City, surely it will be considered unsafe for government offices to reside over the metro.

Who’s Closing

BAE Systems is planning on closing its Sealy, TX location by June 2014. By June 2014, 325 workers will be out of work. Despite having an agreement with Lockheed Martin to produce Lockheed’s Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) at BAE’s Sealy location, it’s still not enough to keep the facility open. Lockheed plans to move JLTV production to its Camden, AK facility. BAE executives are also concerned about their York, PA facility as well.
