It’s not enough to be wary of phishing scams when it comes to hiring. Now, the FBI warns us of firing phishing scams. While remote work is part of our new normal, it is critical to be extra wary of all incoming communication. With so much in the news about businesses cutting back the fear of layoffs might be high, be extra cautious with how much you click on in your inbox. Just because you get an email titled “Termination Review Meeting” does not mean that your job is actually on the chopping block. Links promising termination benefits could be malicious. While you may still have your job after clicking on a link, you may not have your computer and your organization may suffer some fallout from being compromised. When in doubt, check with others before you click.
Layoffs Impacting the Defense Industry
| Boeing | Boeing begins another round of voluntary layoffs this week. Employees who opt in to leave the company will receive a layoff package. Commercial airplanes division, services division, and corporate office are all in the affected category. In May, Boeing began their layoffs totaling 6,770 employees across the U.S. Additionally, 5,520 U.S. employees were approved for Boeing’s first round of voluntary layoffs.
“While we have seen signs of recovery from the pandemic, our industry and our customers continue to face significant challenges,” the company said in a statement. “We have taken proactive steps to adjust to the market realities and position our company for the recovery. As we continue to assess our workforce and in response to employee feedback, we will be offering a second voluntary layoff (VLO) opportunity for employees to depart the company voluntarily with a pay and benefits package.” |

It’s the season for parents to juggle the back to school life, except most parents are finding this year a little more stressful than others. From rotating schedules, to worrying more about the safety of the children, or to stressing about balancing work with basically homeschooling, this is is not your typical back to school season. Most parents are finding a pull between work and children. In order to maintain top talent, employers need to be ensuring working parents have what they need, whether its resources or time, to juggle this tricky season and succeed personally and professionally.

| Raytheon | El Segundo, CA is the place to be if you want to work for Raytheon. Raytheon is looking for 300 candidates with a high level of expertise for roles in cybersecurity, hardware, and systems design and engineering. Raytheon’s Space & C2 Systems VP, Wallis Laughrey cites continued customer demand in 2020 as the driver behind the hiring needs. Raytheon’s El Segundo campus employs around 6,000 and works on a variety of projects that include radar systems, sensors, and electronic warfare technologies. |

Opportunity to Watch
Service members transferring out of the military may pick a state to transition to based on likability from their time spent in service. Or maybe family or friends top the list when deciding where to settle down. After making many moves in service to the country, focusing on personal life is a worthy decision. But if you’re looking for a state that has jobs for veterans, look no further than my favorite state: Virginia.
“Virginia is home to a strong military and veteran community,” Virginia Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Barry DuVal said in a statement. “With 30 military installations and one of the largest veteran populations in the country, Virginia remains deeply committed to empowering the men and women who answer the call to serve and protect our nation by providing a high quality of life not only while they serve, but as they transition to civilian life.”
Governor Ralph Northam recognizes the value that veterans bring to the state. Virginia offers a Virginia Values Veterans (V3) program that provides training and assistance for organizations who desire to recruit and hire veterans. Northam explained, “The V3 program encourages employers to support and hire these qualified veterans, and the partnership between employers and the program has been a tremendous success, with more than 64,000 veterans hired as a result of the program. I congratulate all of the employers honored today, and thank them for their commitment to our veterans.”
