Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella agrees that employees need time at the office AND time working at home. Microsoft has a strong hybrid policy in place that requires management approval if employees want more remote work hours. However, he strongly disagrees with companies who want to spy on their remote workers, hoping to catch them in productivity lulls. While Nadella calls for more data to solve the productivity versus remote work debate, he says it’s important to get the right data.

One way to get more remote work is to come armed with data. Identify your management team’s goals, and then identify how you can meet or exceed those goals. You may have to compromise on how much remote work you get, but it’s often worth it to see if you can work with what you already have. It’s not enough to tell your boss that you’re more productive at home. You have to show how it benefits everyone.

In fact, Microsoft surveyed 20,000 people across 11 countries in their Work Trends Study, and 87% say they’re more productive in a remote setup. But at the same time, 85% say they’re not confident of productivity levels when people are working remotely. Nadella acknowledged at a recent Yahoo Finance Marketing Summit that this is a paradox.

“I think the best way to bridge the paradox is not to have more dogma, but more data,” he said. “Instead of this being some kind of argument, let the data really help us move forward.”

Nadella pointed out that people don’t come to work for the perks – they come for the people. So, whatever the setup, make room for connections.

Contract Opportunities to Watch: Akima

Akima’s subsidiary, Compass Point, has been awarded three task orders by the U.S. Army to provide program support to the Cyber Capability Development Integration Directorate (CDID) at Fort Gordon, GA.

CDID is the U.S. Army’s force modernization proponent for cyberspace operations, signal communications, and electromagnetic warfare (EW). The three task orders awarded to Compass Point are among the first to be issued by CDID under a multi-award contract valued at $201.8 million over five years to a total of four companies earlier this year.

“Akima and Compass Point are proud to expand our work with the Capability Development Integration Directorate to ensure and improve the U.S. Army’s combat effectiveness and readiness in large-scale combat operations and multi-domain operations,” said Barry Smallwood, President of Akima’s Emerging Markets Group. “Our capability and expertise in supporting signal, cyberspace, and EW operations positions us to help CDID in its mission at the strategic, operational, and tactical levels.”

Cleared Opportunities

L3Harris Technologies has made an investment in Seasats, a privately-owned company involved in the design and production of low-cost, solar-powered maritime autonomous surface vehicles (ASV) for military and commercial use.

The goal is to fuel collaborative development and accelerate production of Seasats’ X3 micro-ASV. The unique design and low-signature waterline make it difficult to detect ASVs by sight and radar. Stealth and endurance are key features for the X3, complementing what L3Harris already has in the works with their ASV offerings.

“Our U.S. Navy customers are pursuing innovative solutions to reliably and efficiently patrol the waters from the Red Sea into the Persian Gulf and we understand their urgent need for proliferated maritime ASV architectures,” said Daniel Gittsovich, Vice President, Corporate Strategy and Development, L3Harris. “Our investment and collaboration with Seasats provides a proven, multi-capability solution for global maritime security challenges.”
