To some, career fairs may sound frivolous and ineffective—perhaps because the word “fair” doesn’t quite capture the professional opportunities these events offer. Career fairs are a valuable way to dive into various industries. The connections you make there can set you apart from other candidates and allow you to ask “off the record” questions you might not get to ask otherwise. Here are a few tips to help you navigate the sea of tables and flyers and move forward with confidence as a post-grad.

Prepare Ahead of Time

Sure, showing up to browse a career fair is a fun and casual way to pursue job opportunities, but going in prepared will help you stay focused and get the most out of the event. Research the companies and employers attending so you’re not overwhelmed when you arrive.

Bring a Concise Resume

Craft a brief, sharp resume and bring it with you to the fair. There’s no need for a lengthy document—think of your resume as a snappy flyer to easily hand off to potential employers.

Don’t be Shy, Ask Questions!

It may sound basic, but don’t be afraid to ping potential employers with questions along the way. The purpose of a career fair is to equip future employees with information about various companies and how they operate, so take full advantage! Be sure to include questions regarding possible next steps for an interview, should you find yourself interested in a job opening.

As a bonus, dress for the job that you want. First impressions are everything, and you may meet your future boss as you make your way through the career fair. On the other hand, don’t feel anxious or frustrated if you feel underwhelmed with your first career fair.  There are plenty of career fairs out there, so attend another if the first isn’t what you hoped for.
